How Hard Is Too Hard? The Fingernail Test That Sorts Every Dog Chew
A dog chew is too hard if you can't dent it with your thumbnail — the test most veterinary dentists go by, and it works in any shop aisle. You probably own the things that fail it: the antler in the toy basket, the knuckle bone under the sofa.
That one line does more work than any list of safe chews. Below: how to run the test, and why your dog's teeth need a lower bar than yours. Then one line on every category people ask about — ours included.
The thumbnail test, in two seconds
Cornell's canine health center names it the thumbnail test and credits it to most veterinary dentists. You should be able to make a dent in the item with your fingernail — thumbnail, fingernail, whichever you press with. Press hard, the way a back tooth would.
You're looking for a mark that stays: a crescent, a scratch, a pale dent that's still there when you tilt it to the light. A surface that goes shiny and springs back has told you no.
Room temperature. Plenty of owners freeze a chew to slow a fast chewer down. Cold changes the material, not just the temperature, and a stick straight out of the freezer fails a test it would pass on the counter an hour later.
The thickest part. The base of an antler, the knuckle of a bone, the middle of a stick. That's where the back teeth land, and that's the part that has to give.
Squeeze it. VCA's dental guidance says any chew toy or dental treat fed to a dog should bend and give upon compression. Not snap. Give.
Why your dog's teeth need a lower bar than yours
Dog enamel is thin. A 1995 paper in the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry measured 194 dog and cat teeth. Enamel ran between 0.1 and 1 mm — considerably thinner than a human's. Its own author called it a preliminary study, so hold it that loosely. Your molars are still better armored than your dog's.
The layer taking every crunch is the thinner one. That is the whole reason the bar sits where VCA puts it: a chew doesn't have to be harder than a tooth to break one. It only has to refuse to give first.
Cornell is blunt about what follows: fractured teeth are commonly caused by chewing very hard objects. Two board-certified veterinary nutritionists put the reported prevalence of traumatic dental fractures at up to 26%, and say hard objects may be the cause. If your dog has already cracked one, ask your vet what they should be chewing before you buy anything else.

A nail isn't a load cell, and a row isn't your dog. The row tells you which way to lean; the piece in your hand settles it. Where a category needs more than a line it has its own guide: antlers, hooves and marrow bones, lamb trotters, gullet and trachea.
What happened when a lab measured this properly
Researchers publishing in Translational Animal Science ran 25 commercial pet treats through a texture analyzer. The 2 mm probe was there to mimic how a pet bites and chews. Twenty-two could be measured; three cat treats were too small for the machine to grip.
Seven went past the ceiling at 30,000 grams of force: every rawhide sample in the study, two dental chews and one hard chew. The instrument couldn't finish measuring any of them. Meat treats all came in under 5 kg, and biscuits landed between 5 and 10.
One thing that study can't do is settle an argument about ours. No bully stick was in it — the meat treats tested were chicken and beef sausage, duck jerky and dehydrated haddock. We would rather say that than borrow a number measured on something else.
Where our own chews land
So where does that leave ours? What we make is single-ingredient and dried — not bone, not nylon. Beef pizzle for the bully sticks, lamb collagen and unbleached lamb green tripe for the rest. Nobody has run one of ours through an analyzer, so we're not going to tell you what it would score.
What we will tell you. The jumbo cut is the densest thing we make, and a thick 12-inch jumbo takes a firmer press than a thin 5-inch stick. It should still mark. If one ever doesn't, retire that piece — and we'd want to hear about it.

A chew that passes the test can still go wrong
Hardness is one failure mode. The other arrives from the opposite direction — and it lands on every chew you own, ours included.
Once a piece is down to around three inches — small enough to fit whole inside your dog's mouth — it has stopped being a chew. Take it. Trade a treat for it. The session is over and nobody minds.
The same two nutritionists tell vets to pass this on: monitor the dog with the chew at all times, and remove it once it's small enough to swallow. Supervision isn't a suggestion in that sentence.
A dog who chews on one side, or drops a chew they used to love, is telling you something no nail test can. Same for pawing at the mouth. Book the vet before you buy anything else.

Are ice cubes and frozen chews too hard for dogs?
Cornell names ice cubes directly and says not to let your dog chomp them — though licking, chasing and playing with them is fine. Frozen chews fall into the same trap. A stick that dents on the counter can go glass-hard in the freezer, so yesterday's test no longer describes what your dog is holding. If you freeze chews to slow a fast chewer down, thaw one before you judge it.
Can a dog chew be too soft?
Soft isn't automatically safe. A chew that collapses in seconds gives your dog nothing to work on, and the pieces that break off whole are the ones that get swallowed whole. What you want sits in the middle: something that resists, marks under a nail, and comes apart in shavings rather than chunks. Firm enough to be work, soft enough to yield.
What should I do if my dog breaks a tooth on a chew?
Call your vet, and don't wait for your dog to look uncomfortable first. Cornell says a fracture that exposes the pulp will be painful. Some dogs walk away from a full bowl rather than eat through it, and a chronic broken tooth may lead to an abscess. Dogs hide mouth pain well, so a tooth that only looks chipped still earns the appointment. Take the chew that did it with you.
Every chew gets the same two seconds: press, look for the mark, decide. Do it in the shop. Do it again when the box arrives — and once more on the piece your dog has been working since Tuesday.
