85% Protein on a Lamb Collagen Chew: Jaw Work, Not a Meal

85% protein on a lamb collagen chew is a fact about the tissue, not about your dog's diet: the stick is one layer of lamb skin, and that layer is mostly collagen. Jaw work, not a meal. The bowl is still the diet.

Every collagen chew page in the aisle leads with the protein number and stops there. None of them says what collagen protein is made of, which is the part that decides whether the number touches a diet you already got right. This page gives that composition, then says what it settles and what it does not.

Why a single-ingredient lamb chew posts a number that high

Nothing was added to dilute it. Crude protein on a chew label is a guaranteed minimum, and the stick behind it is one tissue: the corium, the collagen layer of lamb skin. It is braided, slow oven-dried, and never coated or treated. Moisture is capped at 14%. Take the water out of one tissue and most of what remains is the protein itself.

What collagen protein is built from

Collagen is not a generic protein with a high score. It has a specific ratio, and it is well measured in the human nutrition literature. A narrative review of collagen protein puts glycine at about a third of it — roughly 33% — with proline near 10% and hydroxyproline at 13.5%.

There is a reason for the ratio. Glycine sits in every third position along the chain, which is what lets three strands pack tightly enough to hold, and the repeating unit is written Gly-Pro-X. The protein had a shape and a job long before it had a percentage.

Structure protein and food protein are not the same job

Collagen is what holds tissue together. It is the principal material of the layer the chew is cut from, and its job in a living sheep is tension. Skin that does not tear, tendon that does not stretch. A protein built to be a cable is not the same object in a nutrition column as a protein built to be eaten. Same word, different work.

Nutrition researchers who put the number at one — one indispensable amino acid short — went on to model how much collagen a human diet can carry anyway. They landed at up to 36% of dietary protein in people, with indispensable amino acid requirements still met.

That figure is human dietary modelling and it stays there: not a dog guideline, not a chew allowance. What it settles is the shape of the objection. Being one indispensable amino acid short makes collagen an incomplete protein source on paper — a scoring problem for a food that must carry an entire diet. A chew has never been asked to carry one.

Which is exactly why the number on the bag does not reach the bowl. A protein that scores as a partial source is a poor candidate to replace a meal — and a perfectly ordinary thing to hand a dog between meals. The bag is not competing with the food. It is competing with the afternoon.

85 and 70: two panels, two tissues

Both numbers are minimums. The collagen braid posts 85% crude protein and the tripe stick posts 70%, and the gap between them is not a quality ranking. It tracks what each tissue is. The corium is a collagen sheet; green tripe is stomach lining dried whole. Two tissues, two panels.

The lamb tripe range posts a 6% fat minimum where the braid posts 1%. Beyond the two panels, no composition figure has been published for either lamb tissue, ours included. Neither figure decides which chew you hand over. A dog that ignores everything else takes to the aroma, and that aroma is the reason tripe wins a picky eater.

The higher number is not the better chew. It is the leaner panel, and that is all the gap between 85 and 70 is. Both lengths in the lamb collagen range carry the same panel, because both are the same tissue. The number does not move with the stick. It moves with what the stick is.

What the protein number does not decide

Four things the percentage does not settle. It is not an allergen statement: a percentage says nothing about which protein a dog reacts to, and the animal decides that, not the column. If that is the question you actually came with, the aisle sorted by animal is the page for it.

It is not a joint claim. High in protein is a claim we make; nothing else is built on top of it. It is not a digestibility figure either, and none is published for any chew of ours. And it is not chew time — there is no published chew-time figure for lamb collagen or lamb tripe, ours included.

None of that is a mark against the number. It is a boundary around what a composition figure can do — describe a material, then stop. Ask it what your dog will do with the stick and it has nothing to say.

Where the chew sits in a diet you already balanced

The chew was outside the diet arithmetic before anyone read its protein column. How much room a treat gets in a day is worked through on the treat ceiling, and this page does not re-derive it. The short version is that the budget is made of calories, not of protein. Whether cutting the bowl on a chew day is warranted depends on calories too. The bowl stays the bowl.

The chew never entered the diet arithmetic, which is why a number that big on the bag can be read and then set down. Nothing in the bowl has to move.
