Lamb Chew Calories: Read the Label by Size and Ingredient
The 6-inch lamb collagen label lists 80 kcal per stick and the 6-inch lamb tripe label lists 85 kcal per stick, both marked ME calculated. Their energy densities are 3,196 and 3,540 kcal/kg respectively — about 91 and 100 kcal per ounce after conversion. A per-ounce figure and a per-stick figure answer different questions.
The guaranteed fat minimums are 3% for collagen and 9% for tripe. Those minimums describe a nutrient guarantee; the separate calorie declaration gives the energy value to use for a treat budget.
Read the label for the ingredient and size
Start with the calorie declaration. The package label for our 6-inch lamb collagen sticks lists 3,196 kcal/kg and 80 kcal per stick, marked ME calculated. The kilogram figure describes energy per unit of weight; the stick figure is the label's portion value.
The label for our 6-inch lamb tripe sticks lists 3,540 kcal/kg and 85 kcal per stick, also marked ME calculated. The product values on this page come from those package declarations. Third-party research and WSAVA examples are identified separately below.
A calorie line is not one of the four guarantees — protein, fat, fiber and moisture are. It sits under its own heading instead, which is not where a label reader's eye goes first. WSAVA's owner handout comes at it from the other side and tells you to contact the manufacturer for calorie information when a label does not state it. Both of these products state it.
Run the conversion yourself
Convert the kilogram value to an ounce. One ounce is about 28.35 grams. Divide 3,196 kcal/kg by 1,000 to get 3.196 kcal/g, then multiply by 28.35: about 90.61 kcal, or 91 kcal per ounce for 6-inch collagen. For tripe, 3.540 kcal/g gives about 100.36 kcal, or 100 kcal per ounce. These are unit conversions of the declared values, not additional measurements.
The 15-count variety pack lists each component separately: its 6-inch lamb collagen sticks at 3,196 kcal/kg and 80 kcal per stick, lamb tripe sticks at 3,540 kcal/kg and 85 kcal per stick, and beef bully sticks at 3,490 kcal/kg. It holds five beef bully sticks alongside ten lamb chews. If you are avoiding beef, the 10-count pack is the lamb-only option.
Use the declaration for the component you are feeding. A conversion to calories per ounce does not turn it into a per-stick value, and a mixed pack has no single calorie value that describes every component.
Why the fat minimum is not the calorie line
A minimum is a floor, not a reading. Crude protein and crude fat appear on a guaranteed analysis as minimum percentages under AAFCO's model pet food label rules. That makes 3% and 9% floors each batch has to clear — not a reading of the sticks in the bag. The calorie content is a separate statement, under its own heading, expressed in kilocalories per kilogram.
The fat minimum alone cannot tell you the energy content. Nor does a difference between two calorie declarations reveal the exact composition of the individual sticks. Use the separately declared ME calculated value for the product and size, rather than trying to derive calories from one guaranteed minimum.
Energy density is only one part of choosing a chew. Which of the two suits your dog turns on texture, on how long a session lasts, and on what your dog will take from your hand at all. What 83% protein on a collagen panel is claiming is a minimum in the same way, and gets a page of its own.
The 6-inch labels, side by side
The table separates the label's calculated energy and per-stick values from its guaranteed nutrient minimums and maxima. The ounce values are calculated from kcal/kg; no stick weight is assumed.

Read these as label declarations, not a measurement of each individual stick. In particular, the per-ounce conversion and the label's per-stick value use different units. Use the per-stick value when budgeting a whole chew.
Count the component you choose. The 10-count lamb collagen and tripe variety pack contains five 6-inch collagen sticks labeled at 80 kcal each and five 6-inch tripe sticks labeled at 85 kcal each. Keep those values separate when planning the day's treats.
Count each component in the treat budget
Count it like any other treat. WSAVA's handout puts treats at less than 10% of a dog's daily calorie intake, and it counts chews as treats. Its table gives a 25 kilogram dog — 55 pounds, inside the 6-inch band — 94 calories a day from treats. A whole 6-inch collagen stick at the label value of 80 kcal, or a tripe stick at 85 kcal, uses most of that example allowance. Count other treats too, and use the allowance appropriate to your own dog.
The same handout prints an energy-density table with a tripe stick at 217 calories an ounce. It names no brand, no species and no method for that row. It sits about two and a half times above the only published measurement for any dried chew, so it is not a figure for these sticks.
An average dog is not your dog, though. Run the 10% rule on your own dog's food rather than on a table. The figure on your own bag of kibble is the only one that answers for the dog in your kitchen.
Smaller dogs, and the number that changes
At 10 kilograms — 22 pounds — the same WSAVA table says 47 treat calories a day. A whole 6-inch collagen stick at 80 kcal or tripe stick at 85 kcal exceeds that example allowance. Foodiepaws lamb chews are sized for dogs 25 pounds and up, so shortening a session does not make a product appropriate for a dog below that size guidance. For an appropriately sized dog, how much kibble to hold back depends on the total calorie plan.
Both lamb lines start at six inches; there is no 4-inch lamb stick. Choose a chew within the published size guidance and supervise the session. A dog on a weight plan your vet wrote gets its treat allowance from the vet.
The 12-inch labels give their own portion values
Read the 12-inch declaration directly. The 12-inch lamb collagen label lists 3,200 kcal/kg and 179 kcal per stick. The 12-inch lamb tripe label lists 3,540 kcal/kg and 212 kcal per stick. Both are marked ME calculated. Converting the densities gives about 91 kcal per ounce for collagen and about 100 for tripe.
Do not double the 6-inch per-stick value: length is a fit rule, not a value rule, and the 12-inch label supplies its own calorie declaration. If you weigh a portion, an estimate from its mass is kcal/kg multiplied by grams eaten, divided by 1,000. That calculation does not assume every stick has the same weight.
Calculated label values and research on another chew
Our package declarations are marked ME calculated. The nearest thing this category has to a laboratory benchmark belongs to a different chew. Researchers at Tufts and the University of Guelph put bully sticks at 2.96 to 3.07 calories a gram, a mean of 15 calories an inch across five sticks. That came from a proximate analysis, not a calorimeter. The one bully stick measurement is beef pizzle, and the only figure of its kind.
Our declared lamb energy densities are 3.196 kcal/g for 6-inch collagen, 3.200 kcal/g for 12-inch collagen, and 3.540 kcal/g for both tripe lengths. They are calculated label values. The bully-stick study used a different product and does not verify these lamb declarations.
Unbleached green tripe, dried whole, is a stomach lining, and lamb collagen is the corium, the collagen-rich middle layer of the skin. A dried pizzle is neither. Three tissues, three separate answers, and a figure for one of them does not transfer to the others.

Does a 12-inch lamb stick have twice the calories of a 6-inch?
Use the label value for the length you choose. Collagen is listed at 80 kcal per 6-inch stick and 179 kcal per 12-inch stick; tripe is listed at 85 and 212 kcal respectively. The 12-inch values are not twice the 6-inch values. Do not infer a stick's weight from its length.
Read the calorie declaration for the ingredient and size you are feeding. Count the portion eaten within the day's treat budget, alongside every other treat.
