94 or 101 Calories an Ounce: A Lamb Chew's Fat Line Is Not Its Calorie Line

Lamb collagen is about 94 calories an ounce and lamb tripe about 101 — seven apart, on two product pages whose fat guarantees read 1% and 6%. Both numbers are published. Neither one came from the fat line.

You had both product pages open, saw a fat guarantee six times higher on the tripe, and waited for the calorie badge to move with it. It moved by seven. The panel in front of you is carrying two separate statements, and only one of them is about energy.

The two numbers, and where each one is published

Both numbers are published on the product page. Our 6-inch lamb collagen sticks carry about 94 calories an ounce on the badge above the title. Lower down, the guaranteed analysis gives about 3,300 calories a kilogram, marked estimated. Those are the same statement in two units.

Our 6-inch lamb tripe sticks publish about 101 and about 3,550, given as an estimate in exactly the same way. Those four figures and the variety pack's per-chew band are ours; every other number here belongs to somebody else, and the page says whose. The word the guaranteed analysis uses is estimated, and this page keeps it.

A calorie line is not one of the four guarantees — protein, fat, fiber and moisture are. It sits under its own heading instead, which is not where a label reader's eye goes first. WSAVA's owner handout comes at it from the other side and tells you to contact the manufacturer for calorie information when a label does not state it. Both of these products state it.

Run the conversion yourself

The badge and the panel are one statement. An ounce is 28.35 grams, and 3,300 calories a kilogram is 3.3 a gram. Multiply the two and you get 93.6, which is the 94 on the collagen badge. Do it again with 3.55 and you get 100.6, which is the 101 on the tripe.

That conversion is the only arithmetic this page performs. It runs between two figures we publish together, which is why it lands within half a calorie of the badge. The 15-count variety pack carries both ends of it on one badge, about 94 to 101 calories an ounce. It holds five thin bully sticks alongside the ten lamb chews, so if you are steering around beef, the 10-count beside it is the lamb-only bag.

Ten seconds with a phone gets you there, on either product page. The badge is not a second, softer number written for marketing: it is the panel figure in the unit you shop in.

Why the fat percentage cannot tell you the calories

A minimum is a floor, not a reading. Crude protein and crude fat appear on a guaranteed analysis as minimum percentages under AAFCO's model pet food label rules. That makes 1% and 6% floors each batch has to clear — not a reading of the sticks in the bag. The calorie content is a separate statement, under its own heading, expressed in kilocalories per kilogram.

So no arithmetic runs from one line to the other. You cannot add up a guaranteed analysis and arrive at an energy figure, and working backwards from a seven-calorie gap to a composition is arithmetic the panel does not license either. It is also why both product pages carry a calorie line instead of leaving you to infer one.

Seven calories an ounce is not how you choose between them either. Which of the two suits your dog turns on texture, on how long a session lasts, and on what your dog will take from your hand at all. What 85% protein on a collagen panel is claiming is a minimum in the same way, and gets a page of its own.

Which stick you pull out moves the number more than which chew you chose

The two chews are seven calories an ounce apart. The sticks inside one bag are further apart than that, because a dried chew is not a machined part and its weight varies from stick to stick.

Read the table as a description of two published panels, not of the stick in your hand. Every line in it sits in the guaranteed analysis block or on the badge above the product title, so any cell of it can be checked in about a minute.

Weight moves the number, not chew type. The 10-count lamb collagen and tripe variety pack puts a per-chew figure on its badge: about 37 to 84 calories a chew. Across that spread, which stick you happen to pull out swings the number by more than forty calories a chew. Take two sticks of the same weight and the chew you chose moves it by six at most.

Where 94 or 101 lands in a day

Count it like any other treat. WSAVA's handout puts treats at less than 10% of a dog's daily calorie intake, and it counts chews as treats. Its own table gives a 25 kilogram dog — 55 pounds, inside the 6-inch band — 94 calories a day from treats. One 6-inch lamb chew, at 37 to 84, fits inside that.

The same handout prints an energy-density table with a tripe stick at 217 calories an ounce. It names no brand, no species and no method for that row. It sits about two and a half times above the only published measurement for any dried chew, so it is not a figure for these sticks.

An average dog is not your dog, though. Run the 10% rule on your own dog's food rather than on a table. The figure on your own bag of kibble is the only one that answers for the dog in your kitchen.

Smaller dogs, and the number that changes

At 10 kilograms — 22 pounds — the same table says 47. For a dog that size a lamb chew is the day's treat rather than an addition to it, which is a scheduling decision and not a disqualification. When a chew is a real share of the day, how much kibble to hold back is a tablespoon calculation rather than a guess.

Both lamb lines start at six inches. There is no 4-inch lamb stick, so for a small dog the lever is the session rather than the size. Take the chew back part way through and the rest of it goes back in the bag, resealed and kept in a cool, dry place. A dog on a weight plan your vet wrote gets its treat number from the vet.

The 12-inch sticks, and where their weight is printed

Both lengths carry the same badge. Both 12-inch pages publish the identical badge to their 6-inch counterparts: about 94 calories an ounce for lamb collagen, about 101 for lamb tripe. A longer stick is more chew at the same published density, not a different chew.

What changes is the weight, and that figure is printed on the pack rather than on the website. Multiply the badge by it and you have the calories for the stick in your hand. Do not double the 6-inch number instead — length is a fit rule, not a value rule, and it is not a calorie rule either.

An estimate on our panel, a lab figure on a different chew

Our two figures are estimates, and say so. The nearest thing this category has to a laboratory benchmark belongs to a different chew. Researchers at Tufts and the University of Guelph put bully sticks at 2.96 to 3.07 calories a gram, a mean of 15 calories an inch across five sticks. That came from a proximate analysis, not a calorimeter. The one bully stick measurement is beef pizzle, and the only figure of its kind.

Our lamb numbers — about 3.3 and about 3.55 calories a gram — sit in the same neighborhood, and that is all they do. No independent laboratory has published a figure for a lamb chew. What is published is the calorie content on our own panel, given as an estimate, and that is what these two badges convert.

Unbleached green tripe, dried whole, is a stomach lining, and lamb collagen is the corium, the collagen-rich middle layer of the skin. A dried pizzle is neither. Three tissues, three separate answers, and a figure for one of them does not transfer to the others.
