Two Chambers of Four: A Tripe Stick in a Sheep's Stomach
Tripe is the rumen and the reticulum: two of the four chambers a sheep's stomach is built from. Ours arrives dried whole and unbleached. Two in, two out. The other pair has other jobs.
A tripe bag tells you two things: it is lamb, and it is tripe. Both are true. Neither tells you a sheep carries four stomach chambers, or which of them is in the bag. That has a clean answer — an old one, and a physical one you can see.
Two of the four: the rumen and the reticulum
The rumen and the reticulum. Those are the two. That is the pair the butcher's definition names. The other two are the omasum and the abomasum — neither goes into a tripe stick. Four is the whole set.
That closes a question most bags leave open. Stomach lining is accurate. It is also half a sentence. A sheep does not carry one stomach with one lining. It carries four compartments in a row, each with its own surface and its own job. Two of those are what you bought.
Green is a separate word doing separate work. It describes the processing rather than the color, and what green actually means has its own page. This one stays on the anatomy.
What the four chambers actually do
The definition is old and specific. The FAO's slaughter and processing guidelines put tripe at the rumen and reticulum of ruminants. Two chambers, named, out of four. It is a butcher's document. The pet shelf changed nothing about which two linings the word covers.
The same page sends human tripe through a 62 to 65 degree Celsius cook to strip the dark internal linings out. Green tripe never takes that step, which is why it keeps its texture and its aroma. The difference is processing, not anatomy — white tripe and your dog's stick came off the same two chambers.
Minnesota Extension gives all four a working nickname: the rumen the paunch, the reticulum the honeycomb, the omasum the manyplies, the abomasum the true stomach. It calls the rumen a fermentation vat that favors microbes. The omasum absorbs water out of what passes through. The abomasum is the only one lined with glands. Four chambers, four jobs — and the word reaches two.
The line that runs through a stomach
One line splits the four. Ohio State's veterinary histology draws it: rumen, reticulum and omasum group as the nonglandular forestomach, against the one glandular chamber, the abomasum. The same chapter calls that fourth one microscopically identical to the simple stomach of a carnivore. Three against one. Your dog already has a version of the fourth.
That line is also why the first three make a chew at all. Their lining is a keratinized, gland-free sheet — skin-like tissue, not secretory tissue. A sheet dries into something a dog can work at. Read that as a description of the tissue, not a measurement of the stick. The histology publishes no drying, hardness or wear figure. Neither do we.
The other lamb chew on the same shelf is not stomach at all. It is a layer of skin, braided, and that page covers the part this one assumes you know. It is also odor free. Tripe carries a rich aroma instead, and that aroma is the point — it is what wins a dog who refuses everything else.
The four chambers, and which two are in the bag
Sorted, it is a short table. Chamber, job inside the animal, and the only column you came for.

That table describes a sheep, not a stick. It tells you which two linings the word covers, and which two it never has — and it stops there, because no bag sorts a stick by row.

The two that are tripe are barely two
The pair is nearly one organ. A small tissue fold lies between the reticulum and the rumen, but the two are not separate compartments — together they are named the rumino-reticulum. That is why one word covers both. The butcher's line is one the animal barely draws itself.
What separates them is the surface. The rumen's lining forms variably pronounced leaf-like papillae. The reticulum's is built from long primary and shorter secondary folds. That is the honeycomb pattern. Underneath, both are the same gland-free sheet. That is why both count as tripe.
That is not a small organ doing a small job. Bergman's review out of Cornell's veterinary college puts short-chain fatty acids at roughly 70% of the caloric requirements of ruminants such as sheep and cattle. It says they are produced in the largest amounts in the forestomach. The forestomach is where a grazing animal makes most of its living, and two of its three chambers are the ones in your dog's mouth.
What the chamber does not decide
The anatomy settles the word, not the chew. There is no published chew-time figure for a tripe stick, ours included. No texture grade, no hardness scale, no split of the nutrition by chamber. Nobody has assayed a dried stick back to which lining it came off. The stick's numbers are not settled. The anatomy is — and the anatomy is the half your question was about.
It does not decide the smell either. Which species carries more of it, and where the smell is actually made, is its own argument. What the aroma does here is the simple part. It is what wins a dog who has turned down everything else.
The state it arrives in is a separate question. The lining reaches your house dried rather than raw, and what drying takes out is measured elsewhere. Whether anything is still alive in it once it has dried has a separate answer again.
No bag names the chamber, ours included. What a US bag has to print is a short list, and the chamber is not on it — not ours, not anyone's. The word already carries the answer, and it does not change what is in the bag. Rumen and reticulum, printed or not.
Sizing it, and how the stick ends
Six inches suits a 25 to 60 pound dog. Sixty pounds and up takes 12-inch lamb tripe sticks, which is the size for a dog that works through a 6-inch too quickly. Six inches is the floor on both lamb lines, so under 25 pounds the rule points at a shorter beef chew. That is a fit rule — not a verdict. Whether a tripe stick earns its place is the verdict page's job.
Take the stub at three inches. Tripe is the softest chew we make. A soft chew reaches the stub faster than a braid. Three inches, or the moment what is left could go down whole, whichever comes first. Then swap it for something else.
One session, on a floor you can wipe, is the whole procedure. Supervision is not optional on a chew this quick. If your dog is on an elimination trial or a plan your vet wrote, ask first. The chamber is not the variable there. The animal is.
