Are Collagen Chews Just Rawhide With a Better Name?
Collagen chews are not rawhide, but they come from the same part of the animal: the inner layer of a hide, called the corium. What separates them is everything that happens to that hide afterwards.
You switched away from rawhide for a reason. Then you turned a braided collagen stick over, read the word hide on the back, and the reason wobbled. Here's the overlap, stated plainly, and here's what the processing difference is worth to your dog.
The overlap most collagen pages skip
Start with the part that sounds bad. Two board-certified veterinary nutritionists writing in Today's Veterinary Practice describe rawhide chews as made from the chemically processed inner hide layer — most often cattle, sometimes pigs, sheep or water buffalo.
The corium is that inner hide layer. So the honest sentence is the one no brand wants to write first — your collagen stick and a rawhide roll begin as the same tissue, on the same animal.
That isn't the end of the argument. It's the start of the useful part, and whether rawhide is bad for dogs turns on the same hinge this does.
What the corium actually is
Skin is layered. The outer grain carries the hair and the pores, and it's the part the leather trade wants. Underneath sits the corium — a dense weave of collagen fiber. That weave is what your dog is working on.
A US patent application for collagen pet chews puts it in one line: the inner layer of bovine hide, referred to as the corium layer, is a source of type III collagen. It describes fresh corium as recently separated from the top grain layer.
That separation is the product. Cut the corium into strands, braid them, dry the braid — and you've got a chew. Ours is lamb rather than beef, and what lamb collagen chews are takes that difference apart properly.
Collagen chew and rawhide, line by line
Three questions settle this argument — and the answers don't line up the way either aisle implies.

Read the middle row twice. An unstated process is not a clean bill of health. It is a blank — and you fill it with whatever the brand is willing to tell you.
Why the route matters more than the layer
Rawhide's route is a chemical one, and the same veterinary review spells it out. The hide may be processed in brine, degreasers, detergents, sodium bicarbonate, hydrogen peroxide or lime, to strip hair and fat, kill pathogens and improve the appearance.
Appearance is on that list. Some of what a rawhide goes through is neither preservation nor safety. It's cosmetic.
The same review names the additives too. Scrap rawhide to add weight. Colors and flavors for palatability. Glues to hold a shape. It also notes rawhides are not treated as a food, which puts them outside AAFCO registration and labeling rules altogether — so the bag isn't obliged to tell you any of it.
Where the collagen story gets uncomfortable
Here's the part we'd rather not print. That same patent application describes washing the fresh corium in about 13% to 15% hydrogen peroxide. Further down, it adds dyes and flavorings as coatings. Peroxide, color and flavor all appear on the rawhide list too.
A collagen chew is not automatically a chemical-free chew. One patent is not an industry, and it isn't ours. It is the closest thing this category has to a published recipe, and it doesn't read clean.

The digestibility claim nobody has measured
Digestible is the word this whole aisle argues on, so ask where the number comes from. Researchers put nineteen dog treats through simulated gastric and intestinal digestion and sorted them into six categories: biscuit, bone, chew, dental, meat product and rawhide.
Rawhide got a category of its own. Collagen was never one of them. And rawhide's results were wide rather than damning — 14.2% to 73.1% of dry matter gone after the stomach phase, 77.5% to 99.5% after the intestinal phase.
Bone was the least digestible thing tested, by a distance. So a brand telling you collagen digests better than rawhide is asserting something the published work hasn't measured. We haven't found that study, and we sell the stuff.
Nobody has run a bully stick through that instrument either. Bully sticks against rawhide is where we say so, and where the difference is at least a different tissue.
What you can check, and what you can't
You can't see a corium under a braid. Nobody can, without an instrument. What you can read is the ingredient statement — and one line is the whole test: one animal, one tissue, nothing added for weight or color.
Then ask the brand the questions the panel doesn't answer. A company that replies is telling you something. A company that doesn't is telling you something too, and the same logic runs through bully sticks and the rawhide question.
Across both lamb collagen sizes you're choosing a length, not a formula. The formula is that one line either way.
Size, supervision and the stub
The layer argument stops mattering the moment a piece gets small. Any chew that fits whole inside your dog's mouth is a swallowing risk — whatever it was made of. Swap it for a treat and throw the stub out.
Match the length to the dog. Collagen starts at 6-inch here, which is the 25 to 60 lb size, and 60 lb and over takes 12-inch lamb collagen sticks. Under 25 lb, nothing in the collagen line is short enough; the 60-second chew quiz will point you at something that is. Stay in the room while it's being worked on.
If your dog is on an elimination diet or a prescription food, clear collagen with your vet before it joins the rotation. And if stools loosen and haven't settled in a day or two, pause and ask your vet before the next one.
