Are Collagen Chews Digestible? Two Ranking Pages Say Opposite Things
Yes, collagen chews are digestible — but no published assay has measured one, so a percentage printed on a collagen bag is an argument about tissue, not a test result. Search the question and you get two confident answers pointing opposite ways.
One retailer page rates collagen slower to break down than a bully stick. Another sells it as the gentle pick for a sensitive stomach. Neither shows a number. Here's what has actually been measured, what nobody has, and the part you can read off your own floor.
The two answers, side by side
Two retailer pages, two opposite answers. One says a collagen chew breaks down in the stomach more slowly than a bully stick does. The other says collagen is the easier chew on a sensitive gut, and that a bully stick can leave a dog with loose stools.
Read them an hour apart and you'd think they described different products. Read them together and you notice something better. Neither carries a figure, a method, or a link.
They're also not comparing the same things. One measures collagen against a bully stick. The other never compares collagen to anything — it sets bully sticks against rawhide and leaves the collagen claim alone. A claim can be defensible and useless at once, and it gets there by never naming what it measured.
What would settle it
A digestibility figure comes from a method. Something gets weighed, digested in a beaker on a clock, and weighed again. What the word means inside that beaker, and what it stops meaning outside one, is the whole of the bully-stick version of this question. None of it changes for lamb.
Neither retailer page ran anything, and neither cites anyone who did. Both are reasoning from tissue: collagen is a protein, protein breaks down, so the chew breaks down. Sound as far as it goes, and well short of a number.

What two labs actually measured
The method has been published on commercial pet treats twice. One run in 2014 covered nineteen treats. One in 2020 covered twenty-five. Both sorted them into shelf categories before testing.
The figures below are totals: everything gone after six hours in a stomach stand-in, plus eighteen more in an intestinal one. Neither run included a collagen chew.

Follow the rawhide row across. Same method, six years apart, and the floor drops from 77.5% to 35.1%. That's a forty-two point swing inside one word, decided by whichever rawhide happened to be on the bench. The 2020 team found the same wide spread inside categories that the first one did.
The categories are shelf labels, not chemistry
The 2014 authors say plainly how they sorted. Treats were classified by appearance, size and functionality. Read that twice — the categories every retailer now argues over were assigned by looking at the product.
It shows in the list. Five of the nineteen treats carry the word rawhide in their description, and only two of them sit in the rawhide category. Two rawhide chews flavored with sweet potato were counted as biscuits. An extruded rawhide braid was counted as a meat product.
So the biscuit row is two-thirds rawhide. It cleared 93.9% to 98.8%. The rawhide row, holding a pig-skin twist and two hide bones, cleared 77.5% to 99.5%. Same tissue, different heading, and the heading is what your whole shopping argument rests on.
Both pages are describing different halves
The 2014 paper does mention collagen — once. One treat in its set was a whole pig ear. It cleared 14.3% in the stomach phase, the lowest of the five meat products, which the authors put down to an ear being mostly cartilage and collagen.
Then they add the other half, citing a rat feeding trial from the 1970s. Collagen's total tract digestibility in that work came out near 100%.
Rats, hide collagen, fifty years ago. It's still the only figure anyone has put next to the word.
Line those against the two pages and the fight ends. Slow in the stomach and near-total by the end are one curve, read from two points on it. One page picked the first point. The other picked the last. Neither said which.
Which is why both survive a fact-check and neither helps you. A pig ear isn't a collagen stick, and cow ears run into the same wall. The joint claim on the same bag has a hole of the same shape.
What decides it is how the chew comes apart
You can't squeeze a chew and learn this. The 2020 team measured hardness with an instrument. Slow samples usually were the hard ones, but a fast-digesting treat could still be hard, and two treats with the same figure could feel nothing alike.
Digestion starts after the swallow. Whether it matters at all is set by the size of the piece going down, and that's decided at the mouth, in front of you.
A braided collagen stick softens as it's worked and gives up strands. Strands and shreds are the shape you want. Some dogs chew; some are only trying to get the thing over the line. Those leave you a chunk. A chunk means the chew was wrong for that dog.
Length is the lever you hold. 6-inch lamb collagen sticks suit dogs in the 25–60 lb range, because a stick that outsizes the jaw stays a two-paw job instead of a swallow. Past 60 lb, 12-inch lamb collagen sticks hold that same distance.

The stub rule, and the part that is your vet's
Retire the stick at about three inches. Once the piece could go in whole, the digestibility argument is finished and a size argument has started. Trade it for a treat and throw the stub out. Stay in the room while a chew is out.
Start a new chew on a day when nothing else is new, so a loose stool has one suspect instead of three. Collagen is rich — and a dog meeting it for the first time will often tell you so at the other end. If that doesn't settle, pause and ask your vet before trying again.
If your dog has had an obstruction or abdominal surgery, ask your vet before a chew like this goes on the floor. On a prescription or elimination diet, it's your vet's call before it's yours.
